Manayunk homes and their sewer lines

Manayunk climbs steeply from the Schuylkill River and the Manayunk Canal. Its rowhomes and twins step up the hillsides, often with stairs between the sidewalk and the front door. On a steep lot the lateral may be deeper on one end, or the house may sit well above or below the street sewer.

The lowest blocks along Main Street sit in the river’s flood zone. When the remnants of Hurricane Ida hit in September 2021, the Schuylkill flooded Main Street and closed it to traffic.

Common sewer problems we hear about in Manayunk

  • Flood-related backups and silt in lines on low blocks near Main Street and the canal
  • Laterals under retaining walls, steps or terraced front yards, where excavation is costly
  • Steep or deep laterals where a sag (“belly”) or separated joint collects waste
  • Stormwater from hillside downspouts overwhelming older connections

What to know before you fix it

After any flood, get the line camera-inspected before assuming it is fine, because sediment and debris can sit in the pipe. On terraced lots, ask whether lining or pipe bursting can avoid rebuilding steps or retaining walls. If rain backs sewer water into your basement, report it to the PWD hotline at (215) 685-6300.

The rules are the same citywide

In every Philadelphia neighborhood, the owner is responsible for the house drain, curb trap, lateral and the connection to the sewer. A licensed plumber must do the work, and PWD can issue a Notice of Defect with a deadline to fix it. Eligible owners can spread the cost over 60 months at zero interest with the HELP loan.
